The staff at JVE has a number of fun learning activities planned for students during the month of February, which is designated as Black History Month. These activities include read-alouds and video clips about Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy as well as discussions and activities focused on friendship, respect, and inclusion. The following activities are sponsored by the library!

Black History Month School Wide Activities Sponsored by the Library

  • Interactive Bulletin Board – The bulletin board right outside of Mrs. Marler’s room is decorated for the month with biographies of famous African Americans from the past and present. Biographies will be added or changed out weekly. Classes can stop by and learn about these people!
  • Book Display and Teacher Checkout – There is a display of books on the shelves in the front lobby area. These include fiction books with strong African American characters and nonfiction books including biographies. There are several newer titles. Teachers can take a book to share with their class and then return it to the display
  • Research Contest for grades 3-5 – Students will use NCWiseOwl to read about a list of famous African Americans and then match them to their descriptions on a sheet. Students will begin work on this during library classes. If students do not finish during library class, they work on it independently at school or at home. Papers will be turned in to the library. I will draw out a winner from each class for a prize. Winners must have all answers correct.
