JVES Students, Parents, and Staff:
We have been invited to participate in this event by Robert Cooper who oversees the walking club at Clyde Elementary. We don’t have a walking club but our students walk each morning in the gym between 7:30-7:50am. I’m very excited about this event and would love for many of you to make it a family outing this Saturday. Hope to see you there!
Family End-of-Year Event
Saturday, June 2, National Trails Day:
Brevard Estatoe Trail
Register at 8:15 a.m.
Group Walk Begins at 9:00 a.m.
An Easy, Non-competitive Walk for All Ages
We expect up to 60 children and their families from Jonathan Valley and Clyde Schools, plus Girl Scouts from Haywood and Buncombe Counties. All children will receive an opportunity to do a scavenger hunt on the walk, a Walk Together patch, and a coupon for FREE ICE CREAM!!!
Amble along a shaded pathway beside the Davidson River which includes a portion of the Estatoe Trail, used by the Cherokee as a trade route between western NC and SC. Watch the various activities on the Davidson such as fly fishing, tubing, and enjoying the cool waters.
Directions to the Registration Point: Take the I-26 Airport Exit, traveling past the airport and fairgrounds toward Brevard. At the light before the intersection of NC 280 and US 276/64, turn right into the WalMart/BiLo shopping center. Then turn left towards BiLo. Registration will be in front of BiLo, to the right as you face the store, but please park away from the store as to not hinder store customers. After you register each member of your family, you will drive ¼ mile to the start point.
There is a 10k option, but for this event all children will be walking a 5k route. There are no bathrooms on the 5k route, so plan to take care of this need before the walk starts.
The trail is fairly level, but one short segment of the walk has lots of roots. Tennis shoes will be fine for most walkers. You won’t need walking sticks, but we urge you to bring a water bottle and protein snack. Children will be required to walk with the group. The walk will take a little more than an hour.
